P351 Storyboard/Continuity Exercise

In this exercise you will create a 6-8 frame storyboard, capture footage, and edit a sequence that demonstrates continuity-style production. The project should also highlight your camera skills and framing techniques. Please note that this project should illustrate your mastery of continuity (not-discontinuity). In other words, no jump-cuts, split screens, or complexity-style editing.

You will shoot these during your lab time in small groups (2-3 people) If you have three people in your group, you will shoot 3 sequences, one for each group member. Plan on using your partners as talent. Please be prepared to serve as talent for your fellow classmates.

Start with an idea that's do-able and tells a story- or a story fragment. It should be something you can shoot in an hour during lab. After submitting your storyboards to Canvas, your group may go out and record all of your sequences. Your completed production will be due the following week.

Be sure to use a tripod unless you have a very good reason not to.

You will be graded on the following:

  • 6 – 8 frame storyboard. (5 points) It helps to use a template and to include a one-line description below each frame. Upload a copy to Canvas and bring a hard/printed copy to lab.
  • Production & edited program (15 points - turned via your IUBox 351 folder)
  • 1-page (minimum) critique (5 points - uploaded to Canvas).

Technical Requirements

  • Minimum 6 shots - maximum of 8 shots
  • Natural sound must be used. Dialog, music, & sound effects may be added if desired but are not required.
  • The video must start and end in black.

Hints for a stronger project:

  • Use the storyboard templates (available here)
  • Draw neatly (even if using stick figures)
  • Use close-ups to show key elements/story points
  • Repeat and overlap action when shooting (E.g. same action shot two different ways)
  • Don't use unmotivated pans & zooms
  • Cut on action to motivate your edits

Oututting & turning in your Storyboard / Continuity Sequences:

Turn in an HD-sized (1920 x 1080), Quicktime, MXF, or MPEG movie saved as your username

  • Be sure not to include color bars, countdown and a slate.
  • Be sure it starts in black and ends in black. (I recommend setting an in point (or your work area) at the beginning just before you fade up from black and an out point at the end right after it fades to black.
  • Quicktime movies, MXF, or MPEG exports are fine- Just be sure to name the movie after your login name or IU id. (jarkraus.mpeg for example)
  • Place your completed movie in your P351 IUbox folder.
Critique:
  • Consider your individual shots (technically and aesthetically) and how they work together as a whole. Note issues, successes, and address the overall experience. Document this in a critique (1-page minimum)
  • Upload your critique to Canvas.
